The Großer Wannsee is strictly speaking not a lake, but a huge curve in the Havel river, but everyone refers to it as a lake. The Havel river has many big curves and this created a huge and beautiful area with many interconnected lakes in the western part of Berlin. It is one of the many features of Berlin that makes this city so appealing. Especially on warm sunny days it is quite wonderful that a lake is never far away.
The Großer Wannsee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Berlin and very popular with water sports enthusiasts. At the shore you can find many water sport clubs. If you want to, you can sail, kayak or rent a motor boat. There is also a very nice lido with a sandy beach that gets quite crowded on hot summer days. If you are looking for a little more peace, you should either go during the week or find a secluded spot at the shore of the lake. Please note that bathing within the waterway is forbidden and dangerous.
A great way to explore this charming lake is by bike. You can take the S-Bahn to the stop Wannsee and then take the route in the direction of Potsdam. Most of the time you will be able to bike right along the shore with stunning views. If you are looking for a more relaxed way to explore the lake you can take a tour on a river cruise ship that lasts between one and three hours. The boat makes several stops where you can hop on and off. A truly splendid experience.
A trip to Großer Wannsee feels like a little vacation and is absolutely worthwhile.
