Rangsdorfer lake is located south of Berlin, not too far away from the city. It is quite big with 272 hectares and a lot of it is integrated into a nature reserve. In spring and fall you can watch thousands of migratory birds resting here on their route south. During the summer season the lido attracts many people, who are drawn in by the sandy sunbathing area and the wonderful view of the lake. Admission to the lido is free. You only have to pay for your food and drinks as well as the use of the toilets. There is a snack bar, as well as a restaurant that serve food for a reasonable price. The sunbathing area is spacious and the beautiful birch trees provide shade. Most of the times this place is calm and relaxed. On some days, especially on hot weekends it can get crowded. But it is no problem to find a spot to relax. People coming here are mostly of the older generation and living nearby but also families with children like this place. The spot is beautiful, even though the buildings are old and shabby. But this creates a special charm.

You can explore the lake by boat which can be rented nearby. After some minutes you will experience a tranquility that soothes the soul. The lake is fairly shallow which is a plus if you have small children. Unfortunately the water quality differs and is sometimes not so good. You can still bathe there, but it dampens the joy of swimming. You can reach this lake by car or by bike.

If you are looking for a lovely spot, away from the masses of Berlin tourists and if you are into the nostalgic charm of DDR architecture, then this is a place you have to see.
